Grinding

What does in mean to grind? As a life long skateboarder I have my own unique definition

Vignette 1 – Redefining “Grinding”

My son says he’s grinding when he’s playing video games – try to chase high score, pass a level, etc. But is there really effort involved? For me, the hardest actual grinding I’ve seen with youth has been on the field — the athlete who chooses to push their body and continue even when they don’t want to. Grinding isn’t about choice or enjoyment. It’s doing what you don’t want to do, because you value the outcome more than the discomfort.

Vignette 2 – Swallowing the Medicine

Grinding is like swallowing bitter medicine. You don’t want the taste, but you know it’s the only way to heal. In life, grinding is that medicine — the effort, fatigue, and monotony you endure not for the moment, but for the better version of yourself it creates.

Vignette 3 – The Newspaper Route

Grinding is waking up at 5 a.m. to fold and deliver newspapers on your bike, not because it’s fun, but because that’s the only way you earn money to get the things you want. Or a kid mowing their neighbor’s lawn in the August Florida heat. It’s the small sacrifices, repeated daily, that stack up into something greater than the grind itself.

Vignette 4 – Canvassing The Neighborhood

Grinding is going door to door to campaign for a candidate that you are passionate about – even if the majority of the people in that neighborhood hate your candidate. And not reacting when you are verbally prodded or provoked. The task itself isn’t joy. The joy comes later — when you realize you grew tougher, sharper, more resilient because of it.

Vignette 5 – The Hidden Reward

Grinding is doing what you least want to do, but reframing it so the purpose outweighs the pain. You don’t have to love the task. But if you can learn to love what it makes of you, then every grind becomes fuel for growth.
